Who We Are

We are the International Rescue Committee - a critical global network of first responders, humanitarian relief workers, healthcare providers, educators, community leaders, activists, and volunteers. Working together, we provide access to safety, sanctuary, and sustainable change for millions of people whose lives have been shattered by violence and oppression.

Our Mission

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement, and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression.

Our Work

The IRC is on the ground in 42 countries, with 24 resettlement offices, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees, and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster.

Our Efficiency

The IRC is consistently awareded high marks by charity watchdog groups and respected publications for the efficient use of its financial support and the effectiveness of its work. Of every $1 the IRC spends, 90 cents goes to programs and services that directly benefit refugees and war-affected populations.

Courageous Beginnings

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage - to move in the opposite direction."
- Albert Einstein, at whose suggestion the IRC was founded

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction." - Albert Einstein.

Albert Einstein, at whose suggestion the IRC was founded, understood that some of the world's most complex problems had very simple answers. We at IRC see this everyday in our work. Give a child an education and they can break the cycle of poverty. Provide a mother with health care and she can survive child birth. Supply a community with clean drinking water and hundreds can be spared debilitating illness.

Students across the country have joined with the IRC to prove that with simple, action oriented projects, they can make major changes in the lives of those who were born into poverty. Whether it is holding a concert, organizing a bake sale, or simply spreading the word about human rights issues, students are standing up to the injustices of the world. These students know that the actions they take now are relative to the future, not just in their communities, but the world over.
